The name Moriori word for Chatham Island is Rekohu
- Explain the story of Nunuku’s Covenant..
There was a Chief called Nunuku’s Covenant and he forbade warfare and killing and ordered his people to live together in peace. They obeyed his rules and they only were fighting with only wooden staffs, called Tupuari until first blood was drawn. Then the fighting had to stop and the honour was considered satisfied. Then the Moriori followed the Law of Nunuku for many centuries.
- Why did the author want to share this story?
I think the author wanted to share this story because it showed that the Moriori people were good because they listened to their Chief and followed his Law’s. They also welcomed the British people that came to the Chatham Island and they welcome them even though they looked strange.
