Te Ika Maui- Story

In the southern corner of the pacific ocean lies an island. This island is known as
Te Ika Maui, and this is the story of how this name came about. Maui was not like
his older brothers and Maui was not liked by his older brothers. His brothers were
jealous and afraid of his powers, they did not include him on any of their hunting
and fish trips.

One night Maui overheard his brother's conversations, his brothers planned a
fishing trip and planned to leave early in the morning to avoid taking Maui. Maui
ran to his secret cave, reaching behind a big rock he pulled out his grandmother's
jaw-bone, “This will be my hook” Maui said. Holding the jaw-bone Maui trembled
while feeling the power run threw his body. He ran to the waka and hid under the
flax mat, Maui then fell asleep.

The next morning, Maui’s brothers crept down to their waka and paddled out.
But little did they know Maui was on the waka the whole time, he waited until
they were far out to sea then he jumped out and surprised his brothers.
“Kia Ora my brothers, it’s me Maui your youngest brother” Maui said, they look
very angry with Maui. Maui said an ancient karakia he had said before and there
waka went flying through the calm water.

His brothers didn’t share their bait with him so Maui punched his nose and it
started bleeding, Maui put the blood on the hook and swung it above his head seven
times and casted the hook out far away in the sea. A few minutes later his hook
started tugging, he pulled but the fish was so strong. Maui pulled and pulled and he
pulled up a giant fish. This giant fish became the North island of New Zealand.

  1. Kia ora Zamera,
Thank you for sharing your retelling of the story of Te Ika a Maui. Would you have punched your own nose for bait like Maui? He outsmarted and then outfished his brothers. Do you know the story of how Maui came to have his grandmother's jawbone? See if you can find out:)
